The Mira Bit is designed for milling model wax on 5-Axis NS CNC Milling Machines. The bit has a special tapered shape with an extremely tiny tip and parameters that allow it to work for up to one year without a change. The milling cutter can cut very small relief details with a resolution of up to 0.3 microns. The geometry of the bit allows milling to a depth of 26 mm without rough milling. The Mira Bit is one of a kind in the model wax milling market.

The History of the Mira Bit

The history of the Mira Bit has been in the making for more than 10 years. Its design has evolved and improved along with CNC milling technology in the jewelry business. Traditional tapered cutters have been used for 3 and 4 axis CNC wax milling for a very long time. For such milling bits, a cutting length of up to 10 mm is used. This is more than enough for simple flat reliefs in jewelry modeling.

But since the advent of 5 axis machines for jewelry wax milling, the question arose that the cutting length should be longer. Wax models became more and more complicated and faster milling times were required. Since the workpiece, during 5 axis milling, rotates through large angles and in different directions, milling bits with a length of first 12 mm, and then 19 mm began to appear on the market.

NS CNC, being a leader in the production of 5 axis CNC machines for jewelers, began the research and development of a milling bit even longer, up to 26 mm. The manufacturing of such bits is very difficult and requires the most advanced equipment. Since the tip of the mill bit should have a spherical shape and a diameter of 0.1 mm, in this case the run out of the tip should be limited to 1 micron or less. 

As a result of numerous tests and trials, the first versions of the cutter began to appear. Machine users were very pleased with the appearance of the first long cutters with such precise characteristics. This made it possible to produce much more complex wax models that could not be achieved with traditional short bits. 

But, having made the first Mira Bits a few years ago, we did not stop at the success we achieved. Changing the geometry of the flutes, helix angle and other parameters, we have achieved superior results. The bit that we now supply with the machine can mill the most complex models up to a full depth of 26 mm, without preliminary or rough milling, at full feed rate.

Two types of Mira Bits

NS CNC offers its customers two tapered milling bits for wax. The standard “Mira Bit” and an additional specialty milling bit, the “Mira Bit-X”. The standard milling bit is applied to all of your basic daily jobs. The Mira Bit-X is used specifically for special work and by advanced users only.
